There are many different types of rock, each an individual, but overall there are three types of Rock: Igneous, Sedimentary and Metamorphic. However, there are no boundaries between these rocks and often there can be dispute and so a grading system is used to define a rock. It is true however that different types of stone will be found in different locations and thus many of the buildings, statues and other structures of the past will reflect the type of rock in that area.
We have since moved on from the Bronze Age, Copper Age and Stone Age but as a society, stone is still a very important building tool and continues to have many other uses. Marble is used for a large range of purposes as it is considered very attractive and thus can be used for ornaments, work surfaces or even floors and walls to name but a few.
Sandstone buildings can be seen in many areas of the country and as it is very workable, many sculptors use this stone for their work. Continuing with the theme of building, stone can also be used to form tiles, part of the recipe for concrete, be used for paving surfaces or simply used free in the form of chips. Limestone is also a very useful stone which can be used to form lime and also to line furnaces. Finally, a lesser known application of some types of stone is in the form of insulators in certain electrical items.
There are many places to buy bricks, including Quarries and Sellers of Stone. Companies specialising in stone will be able to give advice on what type of stone is most appropriate for each purpose and thus provide the best result. When buying bricks, they can either be bought new or used. There are advantages to reclaimed bricks which many may not have considered.
These reclaimed bricks will already have proved that they are wearable and durable and if wished, they can be weathered looking in appearance which can link into certain looks, for example Rustic. A common Reclaimed stone is York stone which proves the earlier point of being very durable and hard wearing whilst still being attractive.
When buying bricks, the most important thing is to make sure that the brick works for the purposes that you need it for and to ensure that it fits in with the image that is in mind. It is important also to choose the brick before choosing any other furnishings as each finish will be individual to produce a unique final piece.
